The Solo Ager’s Everyday Safety Checklist

Safety Checks You Can Complete in 10 Minutes

Small steps that build big confidence. No stress, no overwhelm.

Staying safe at home doesn’t have to be complicated or time‑consuming. In fact, a simple 10‑minute weekly habit can help you feel more grounded, more confident, and more prepared as a solo ager.

This quick-win checklist focuses on three key areas that make the biggest difference in your daily security:

· Your home

· Your information

· Your personal essentials

You don’t need special equipment or complicated systems, just a calm moment, a clear mind, and a few minutes to set yourself up for peace and protection.

Step 1: Check Three Key Areas of Your Home (3 Minutes)

A quick walk-through once a week keeps your home secure and gives you confidence as soon as you walk back through the door.

✔️Entry Points: Doors & Windows

  • Are the doors locked?
  • Did any windows get left unlatched after airing out the house?
  • Do outdoor lights still work?

Even small adjustments strengthen peace of mind.

✔️ Kitchen & Appliances

  • Stove and oven knobs in the OFF position
  • Small appliances unplugged (toaster, coffee maker, heater)
  • No towels or paper goods near heat sources

A 10‑second glance prevents most common at-home accidents.

✔️ Pathways & Floors

  • No tripping hazards
  • Clear paths from bed to bathroom to kitchen
  • Rugs are secure and lying flat
  • Nightlights are working

These tiny checks reduce fall risks, which remain the #1 concern for women living alone.

Step 2: Make Sure Essential Information Is Easy to Reach (3 Minutes)

Your goal here isn’t to organize everything. Just to confirm your most important items are where they should be.

✔️ Emergency Contacts Sheet

Make sure it is:

  • Visible
  • Legible
  • Located in the same place every time
  • Most women keep it:
  • On the fridge
  • In a kitchen drawer
  • Inside a wallet
  • Near a landline or charging station

✔️ Medical & Personal Essentials

Check that you have:

  • A current medication list
  • Key health notes (allergies, conditions)
  • Doctor phone numbers
  • Insurance card in purse or wallet

This isn’t your full medical file. It's just the basics someone may need to help you.

✔️ Home Information

Confirm these are in their usual places:

  • Spare key or lockbox code
  • List of trusted service providers
  • Flashlight or emergency light
  • Phone charger and backup battery

When an issue comes up, you’ll know exactly where everything is.

Step 3: Refresh Your Purse & Car Essentials (4 Minutes)

This is where many women feel the most empowered after just a few adjustments.

✔️ In Your Purse

Do you have:

  • Phone
  • Reading glasses
  • House and car keys
  • Small flashlight
  • Snack or mint
  • Medication you may need
  • Emergency contact card

(Not a lot, just the essentials.)

✔️ In Your Car

A quick peek in the glove box is all you need. Confirm you have:

  • Registration & insurance
  • Phone charging cord
  • Water bottle
  • Blanket or sweater
  • Small umbrella
  • Flashlight
  • Basic first-aid items

Again, keep it simple. No need for fancy kits unless you enjoy them.

That’s It. 10 Minutes to More Peace & Confidence

This checklist is intentionally short and simple.
It’s not meant to replace detailed safety planning; that’s what the full Security Module will cover.

It’s meant to help you feel more in control today, with only a few small steps:

Home secure.

Information ready.

Essentials with you.

When you do this once a week (many women choose Sunday evening or Monday morning), your home feels calmer and your mind feels clearer.
